The foundation of God's redemptive drama from Genesis to the Patriarchs and Job

“I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel.”
Genesis 3:15 is the Protoevangelium (First Gospel), foretelling Christ's decisive victory over Satan at the Cross.

1. The Cosmic Creation and the Cataclysmic Fall (Genesis 1–3)
The grand 66-book metanarrative opens with the majestic declaration: "In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth" (Gen 1:1). God created all things in supreme goodness, forming humanity in His own divine image (Imago Dei) for holy covenantal communion. However, deceived by the serpent, Adam rebelled against God's sovereign command, fracturing humanity's relationship with the Creator and plunging all descendants into spiritual death and total depravity.

2. The Protoevangelium: The Seed of the Woman (Genesis 3:15)
Right amidst the pronouncing of righteous judgment, God unveiled the eternal Covenant of Grace: the Protoevangelium (First Gospel). "He shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel" (Gen 3:15). This prophesied the coming of Jesus Christ—born of a virgin—who, through His substitutionary death on the Cross and bodily resurrection, would crush the ancient serpent's head forever. The entire 66 books are the unfolding history of this promised Seed.

3. The Abrahamic Covenant and Job's Living Redeemer
Following the Flood and the Babel rebellion, God sovereignly summoned Abraham from pagan idolatry in Ur (Gen 12:1–3): "In you all the families of the earth shall be blessed." This covenant passed to Isaac, Jacob, and Joseph, laying the foundation of Israel and leading to Jesus Christ. Amid deep agony, Job boldly testified: "For I know that my Redeemer (Goel) lives, and at the last he will stand upon the earth" (Job 19:25), anchoring faith in the living Messiah.

Sovereign Lord God, Creator of Heaven and Earth, thank You for ordaining the eternal plan of redemption before the foundation of the world. Thank You that in the Protoevangelium, You promised the Seed of the woman who crushed the power of sin and death.

The blood of the Passover Lamb, the Tabernacle sacrifices, and wilderness sanctification

“Now therefore, if you will indeed obey my voice and keep my covenant, you shall be my treasured possession among all peoples, for all the earth is mine; and you shall be to me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.”
God redeemed Israel to be a kingdom of priests and a holy nation—the identical identity bestowed on the Church (1 Pet 2:9).

In-Depth Biblical Exposition

1. The Blood of the Passover Lamb and Exodus Redemption (Exodus 1–18)
The Exodus is the preeminent Old Testament archetype of salvation. Enslaved in Egypt for 430 years, Israel was liberated through the blood of an unblemished lamb applied to doorposts (Passover). As the Apostle Paul proclaims: "For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed" (1 Cor 5:7). Redemption was accomplished not by human merit, but entirely through the substitutionary blood of the Lamb.

2. The Sinai Covenant and the Divine Purpose of the Law (Exodus 19–24)
Having been delivered through the Red Sea, Israel entered into a blood-sealed covenant at Mount Sinai (Exo 24:8). The Ten Commandments and the Law were not given as a mechanism to earn salvation, but as a rule of life for a redeemed community to reflect God's holiness as a kingdom of priests. Furthermore, the Law acts as a guardian (tutor) to reveal our depravity and drive us to Jesus Christ (Gal 3:24).

3. The Tabernacle and Christ the Ultimate Sacrifice (Exodus – Leviticus)
God instructed Moses to construct the Tabernacle so He might dwell among His people. Every instrument—the Bronze Altar, the Basin, the Menorah, the Table of Showbread, the Altar of Incense, and the Ark of the Covenant with the Mercy Seat—foreshadowed Christ. When Jesus cried "It is finished," the temple veil tore from top to bottom, granting every believer bold access into the Holy of Holies through Christ's blood (Heb 10:19–22).

Read Hebrews 4:16 and write down your confidence to approach the throne of grace.
3. As Israel was sustained by manna and water from the rock, how is God training your soul today?
Reflect on Deuteronomy 8:3 that man lives by every word from the mouth of God.

In-Depth Biblical Exposition

1. Conquest, Judges' Cycle, and Ruth's Redeemer (Joshua – Ruth)
Under Joshua, Israel took possession of Canaan, tasting the faithfulness of God. However, the subsequent generation forgot the Lord, descending into the dark cyclical pattern of Judges: sin, oppression, cries of desperation, deliverance through a judge, followed by renewed apostasy. "In those days there was no king in Israel. Everyone did what was right in his own eyes" (Judg 21:25). Amidst this darkness, the Book of Ruth shines as Boaz acts as the kinsman-redeemer (Goel), preserving the royal messianic genealogy of David.

2. The Davidic Covenant: The Eternal Throne (1 Samuel – Kings)
After Saul's tragic disobedience, God anointed David, a man after His own heart. In 2 Samuel 7, God established an unconditional covenant with David: "I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever" (v.13). While earthly Solomon and the divided kingdom collapsed into Babylonian exile, God's promise was fulfilled in Jesus Christ—the Son of David whose kingdom shall never end (Luke 1:32–33).

3. Prophetic Messianic Visions and the 400 Silent Years (Isaiah – Malachi)
Even during national judgment and exile, Old Testament prophets foretold the coming Messiah with astonishing clarity. Isaiah prophesied the Virgin Birth (Isa 7:14) and the Suffering Servant who was pierced for our transgressions (Isa 53:5). Jeremiah announced the New Covenant (Jer 31:31), and Micah pinpointed Bethlehem (Mic 5:2). During the 400 silent years between Malachi and John the Baptist, God orchestrated world history—the Pax Romana and Greek language—so that when the fullness of time came, God sent forth His Son (Gal 4:4).

1. The Fourfold Gospel and the Finished Atonement (Matt – John)
The New Testament is the glorious consummation of every Old Testament promise. The Word became flesh and dwelt among us—presented as King (Matthew), Servant (Mark), Son of Man (Luke), and Son of God (John). On Calvary's Cross, Jesus bore the full wrath of God for our sins, triumphantly crying "Tetelestai" ("It is finished"—paid in full!). On the third day, He rose bodily from the grave, obliterating the power of death and opening everlasting life to all who believe.

2. Pentecost, the Apostolic Church, and Epistles of Grace (Acts – Jude)
Ascended to the Father's right hand, Jesus poured out the Holy Spirit at Pentecost (Acts 2). Filled with supernatural power, the early disciples heralded the Gospel across Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, and to the ends of the Roman world. Through the Epistles, Paul, Peter, and John articulated the glorious doctrines of Justification by Faith (Romans), the eternal mystery of the Church (Ephesians), and unwavering joy amid fiery trials (1 Peter).

3. Revelation: The Consummation, New Heavens and New Earth (Rev 1–22)
The Bible culminates in Revelation, where the ancient serpent, Babylon, and death itself are cast into the lake of fire. Surpassing even the original Garden of Eden, God unveils the New Heavens, the New Earth, and the New Jerusalem—where God Himself dwells with His redeemed people without tears, pain, sickness, or death (Rev 21:3–4). The 66-book tapestry concludes with the triumphant cry: "He who testifies to these things says, 'Surely I am coming soon.' Amen. Come, Lord Jesus!" (Rev 22:20).

Name someone you will love and share Christ with this week.
3. How does the glorious vision of the New Heaven and New Earth in Revelation 21 give you hope amid earthly trials?
Confess your Maranatha longing: 'Even so, come Lord Jesus!'
